This is pictured so clearly in the photo above. That tree is about to be destroyed, but in its destruction, God is briefly providing Light (truth, instruction) to the rest of the surrounding Kingdom.
For too many years, American Christians have been wishy-washy, lukewarm even. We refuse to draw lines in the sand with regards to entertainment and immorality because we care more about what others will say than we do pleasing God. We can’t tolerate the idea someone would call us intolerant. We can’t stand the idea of being seen as a prude, pretending it’s so we won’t hurt our ability to witness, so we watch and read whatever is popular.
Last night, my wife and I started to watch a film recommended to us by a “strong” Christian female friend of my wife. “It’s a good movie!” she’d said. However, the entire film was nothing more than a long series of openly portrayed threesomes, lesbianism, homosexuality, larger orgies, drug-abuse, fully nude strippers, and other depravity. When they had a section that was supposed to be more drama-oriented, then they just interspersed brief flashes of nude strippers at random (so you wouldn’t get bored, I guess?)
And we didn’t even get very far into it. (We stopped watching.)
We asked ourselves how could a follower of Christ call this movie good? It shouldn’t even be a debate.
Also last night, I was in a conversation at church with two other Christian men who were saying that the homosexual activists who’ve been publicly flogging every influential Christian they can get their hands on of late were just doing it because they don’t understand Christianity. It’s not a serious issue in their minds.
We are in a spiritual war.
It is not a war of guns and bullets, but that does not mean it’s not a hard fight. Those men believe that our opponents are just missing the right presentation of the Gospel. As if the right words will change their minds.
What they don’t understand is that our opponents are highly committed to their cause. Yes, they are blind, but our words will never open their eyes. Only God’s power can do that. And God’s power is only released when followers of Christ are passionately pursuing Him, not when we’re joining the world in sipping from the cup of entertainment’s immorality.
God’s power is released when we’re engaged in the battle, not when we’re twiddling our thumbs and waiting for “some” other Christian to go out and witness to those activists.
If we don’t get off our collective duffs, God is going to begin striking some of us with judgment like the photo above, letting the thunder of His act echo across the Kingdom to warn the rest of us.
This is not about embracing legalism. It’s about standing for God and His Will and being the light we were called to be. We were bought with a price. He’s going to use us to light the world one way or the other. We either let Him shine through us, or He’ll judge us and light the world that way.
As Thomas Jefferson once said “Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.”
